HOW TO MAKE A MASTER KEY FROM THE ORIGINAL PUZZLE PATTERN KEY
Factory and dealer installed original equipment spare tire locks are easily defeated using a modified pattern key. A simple modification will convert any pattern key to a master key. A thief can easily obtain a pattern lock key from an auto salvage yard or simply break into any new truck equipped with the factory lock and then steal the key the factory placed in the vehicle's glove compartment. The thief then converts the key to a master key.
The picture at left shows the un-modified raised pattern of the key, machined into the recessed face. The center picture shows the area in red to be removed with the grinding tool. The picture at right shows the two remaining segments of the raised pattern after modification.
Puzzle pattern wheel locks are an effective way to prevent theft of a vehicle's four tires and wheels. When properly tightened puzzle locks can only be removed using a key with the matching pattern. However, there are several reasons why the same concept doesn't work when applied to a spare tire lock designed to prevent access to the shaft of the winch mechanism.
The first reason that a modified master key will defeat this type of lock, is that the shaft of the winch mechanism cannot be tightened tight enough to make the lock effective. The second and more important reason is the counter-bored end of the pattern key. The counter-bored end of the pattern key is designed to install over the end of the round winch shaft lock so that the pattern on the key side and the pattern on the lock side are aligned and centered. The counter-bore now supports the remaining segments of the pattern key, which otherwise would break away when the winch shaft was rotated to lower the spare tire. The combined weight of the tire and wheel suspended from the winch cable is also a factor, because it reduces the effort required to rotate the shaft of the winch mechanism when the spare tire is lowered.
